The Masterworks
Chorale achieves its mission of stimulating interest in and
appreciation of great choral music not only through its own
concert activities but also through its outreach to the community.
Underpinning the Chorale’s outreach activities is the
strong belief that the joy of great music can best be realized
through participation rather than just observation, and that
singing together is one of the best ways there is to build community.
Beginning in 1997, the Chorale began a pilot project to bring
the choruses of area high schools together to rehearse and sing
a special concert with members of the Chorale. The first program
included student choruses from Lexington and Belmont High Schools
and Concord Academy, who worked over the course of several months
in their own rehearsals and with Conductor Allen Lannom to prepare
Mozart’s Requiem . The combined performance included nearly
400 student singers and orchestra players, plus four professional
soloists and a few adult Chorale singers.
For many of the students, this was their first opportunity to
perform with an orchestra and alongside professional singers,
and it proved to be an exciting and rewarding experience. Based
on the success of this first performance, the Chorale repeated
the Mozart Requiem program with Natick, Needham, and Brookline
High Schools in the fall of 1998, and has formalized the program
into a permanent and regular part of the Chorale’s activities.
The most recent student concert was at Lawrence High School
in April, 2004. Allen Lannom conducted the concert which included
students from Lawrence High School in Lawrence, MA, students
from Brookline High School in Brookline, MA, members of the
chorale, and soloists from the New England Conservatory.
The student concert for the 2005-2006 season will be announced
at a later date.
